Creating cuneiform fonts with MetaType1 and FontForge

چکیده

I am interested in scripts, alphabets, writing systems, and in fonts, their computer representation. Ten years ago I decided to create Type 1 fonts for cuneiform, and last year, to extend them to Unicode OpenType versions. In my older Type 1 version (1998/9) [4] the raw text was written ‘by hand’ and then directly compiled into Type 1 with t1asm from t1utils [10]. The glyph set consisted of several separate Type 1 components to cover Akkadian (according to Labat) in a ‘Neo-Assyrian’ form (three files), Ugaritic, and Old Persian. Three books served as principal sources: two Akkadian syllabaries edited by R. Labat [1] and F. Thureau-Dangin [2], and the encyclopedia The World’s Writing Systems [3]. No scanning of pictures or clay tablets was performed. The fonts are based on a starting point—my simple design of wedges in three variant forms (see also Fig. 1, below):

MetaType 1 : a METAPOST - based engine for generating Type 1 fonts

A package for preparing parameterized outline fonts in PostScript [6] Type 1 [8] format is described. The package makes use of METAPOST [3], awk [4], and T1utils [5], therefore is supposed to be easily portable to various computer platforms. Its beta version along with a sample font (Knuth’s logo font) is available from: ftp://bop.eps.gda.pl/pub/metatype1 keywords: outline fonts, scalable fonts...

Latin Modern: Enhancing Computer Modern with accents, accents, accents

The number of (free) fonts prepared with METAFONT is surprisingly small compared, e.g., to what is available in the commercial market in other formats. Well, perhaps not so surprisingly: METAFONT generates TEX-oriented bitmap fonts which have not become popular outside the TEX world. Accepting this irksome situation as a challenge, we have prepared METAType1, a package for generating fonts in t...

Font verification and comparison in examples

This contribution demonstrates several techniques for verifying and comparing fonts widely used with TEX: METAFONT fonts and outline fonts in the PostScript Type 1 and OpenType formats. The aim is to generate various proofsheet files in PDF or PostScript with node and control points, control vectors and hinting zones for the subsequent visual scanning of graphic glyph representation, calculatio...

Fonts OpenType math illuminated ∗

In recent years, we have seen the development of new TEX engines, X E TEX and LuaTEX, adopting OpenType font technology for providing Unicode typesetting support. While there are already plenty of OpenType text fonts available, both from the TEX community and from commercial font suppliers, there is little support for OpenType math fonts so far. Ironically, it was left to Microsoft to develop a...

The STIX Project— From Unicode to fonts

The goal of the STIX project is to provide fonts usable with other existing tools to make it possible to communicate mathematics and similar technical material in a natural way on the World Wide Web. This has involved two major efforts: enlarging Unicode to recognize the symbols of the mathematical language, and creating the fonts necessary to convert encoded texts into readable images. This te...
